April 7–May 8, 2010

Opening Reception:
Wednesday, April 7
5:00-7:00pm

Conversation with:
Alex Kopps and Jonathan Steinberg
 6:30pm

UCSC Sesnon Gallery presents Displacement: We have Come to Ruin Your Surfing by Bay Area artist, filmmaker, and surfer Alex Kopps. Kopps will create a site-specific installation, combining aspects of his visual practice with artifacts, video clips, and elements of his upcoming film, Displacement. Kopps describes his mixed media installations as “a garage sale of texture and emotion.”

Excerpts from Kopps film, Displacement, combine 1970s super8 surf footage by Steve Krajewski and a DIY (do it yourself) approach to contemporary mixed media by the artist. The film is based around an obscure surf subculture inspired by the designs of George Greenough in the 60s and later refined by Greg Liddle in his displacement hulls, or what its proponents call “stubbies.” Stubbies refers to a special breed of surfboards combining qualities of long and shortboards to create a round-bottomed board that sits lower in the water rather than on top of it.

The exhibition is in conjunction with the Santa Cruz Museum of Art & History’s presentation of Surf City Santa Cruz: A Wave of Inspiration running March 27–July 25, 2010 showcasing surf-related work of local artists and technical innovators (http://www.santacruzmah.org/). Support for the Sesnon Gallery exhibition was made possible by the Charles Griffin Farr Fund.

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

Park Life Gallery presents:
Move:18 - Listen with Your Ears and Eyes Wide Open, This Time
Curated by Rich Jacobs
Opening reception Friday, March 20, 2009 7:00 to 11:00 pm.

This art show promises to bring the viewer a little closer to that sound in their own head that won’t stop going, even when it is quiet, wait - is it ever really quiet? The show is an attempt by curator Rich Jacobs, to bring a lot of different influences together, and show people that are open to it, that sound, noise and even music can all be neighbors. They don’t have to get along, but they can be next to one another, at least for a month on the walls at Park Life. There will be plenty of things to see, hear, experience, and even learn from in this show; sculptural works, flat drawings, paintings, and photographs will sit on the walls next to sound pieces and home-made instruments, made specifically for this exhibition. There is sure to be a gentle racket, don’t be afraid to bring a set of open ears, along with those eyes of yours. Chances are you may like something, or even recognize a few of the artists, musicians, and noise-heads involved in the show. They have all been doing their thing for sometime now… come see it all together and witness the sound installation of this move series in person. You will be glad you saw, and heard it.

Featuring work by Tana Sprague, Billy Sprague, Eric White, Cody Hudson, James Gallagher, Richard Mcguire, Chris Shary, Bernie Mcginn, Jason Polan, Cynthia Connolly, Dave King, Ian Johnson, Chris Duncan, Jordin Isip, Alex Kopps, Andrew Scott, Bill Daniel, V.Vale, Brian Flynn, Carl Dunn, Tim Kerr, Pat Graham, Jeff Canham, Luke Bartels, Calef Brown, Sonny Kay, Gabe Voiles, Chrissy Piper, Jfre Robot Coad, Phil Franklyn, Yuri Shibuya, Bill Kouglas, Andy Ward, Hiroshi Kimura, Dora Drimalas, Fritz Welch, Bert Quieroz, Matthew Badja, David Applegate, Koen Holtkamp, Mike Sutfin, Garry Davis, Rodger Bridges, Kyle Ranson, Jeff Manson, James Brown and Pat Delaney.
